Brittany Davis has always been profoundly candid in her music. Both her full-length albums, Image Issues and Black Thunder, are sonic films that transport listeners into the depths of Brittany's mind.

Her aptly named new single, "Behind the Door," remains true to form and continues the spiritual jazz direction that emerged through the improvised sessions of Black Thunder. The album nods toward luminaries such as Nina Simone, Roberta Flack, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and is the product of creative synergy between three masters of their craft.

For the single, Brittany (on keys and vocals) reunites with Evan Flory-Barnes on bass and D'Vonne Lewis on drums. The three musicians barely knew each other before the creation of Black Thunder. There's a saying that lightning doesn't strike twice, but the trio makes a great case otherwise. The ensemble re-emerges, now with an established musical bond and a new emotionally charged piece. Evan's bass and D'Vonne's gentle drum strokes come in like two synchronized heartbeats as Brittany's keyboard work and stream-of-consciousness style lyrics take over. A trumpet (Owour Arounga) playing softly in the background rounds out the song.

"Behind the Door" unlocks more of Brittany's innermost thoughts. In the song, Brittany confronts a reality that lies behind a metaphorical door. She implies that the door opens onto uncomfortable truths she may not be ready to address—either to herself or to others. Brittany also acknowledges anxiety and the desire for respect and validation. At its most vulnerable, "Behind the Door" magnifies the struggles many creatives face in seeking proper recognition. What is popularity, and where does it actually come from? And what does any of it have to do with purpose?

The single is the first from an upcoming album, with a release date to be announced by Seattle's Loosegroove Records.

The song also comes ahead of Brittany's return to Dimitriou's Jazz Alley on August 25-26, where she will be playing as part of the Black Thunder live ensemble with Trevor Ford on bass and D'Vonne Lewis on drums.
