Aptly named, Courtney Barnett's new album doesn't fail to deliver

Courtney Barnett needs little introduction, but if you need a refresher, she’s famous for hits like "Pedestrian at Best" and "Avant Gardener", which was used in Bojack Horseman. As a fan, I think fellow Courtney fans love her lyricism, husky voice, and some lovely shredding skills that put a lot of guitarists to tears. In her new album, Barnett doesn’t reinvent the wheel but she doesn’t have to as her work is filled with an emotional intensity that comes through like the way her voice drawls in mostly patient made me catch my breath, “I know you’re achin’ for better days.”

I remember when “Stay in your Lane” came out, a pop-driven melancholic folk song which deals with themes through her career of alienation, anxiety, and whether she’ll ever get over her tall poppy syndrome.”Sugarplum” is the perfect song, a throwback to her earlier confessional style. In a year like 2026, I welcome the sweet croonings of Courtney in between her talking and singing, reminding me of intimacy in small spaces.
